ESCOM is now inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the following vacant positions currently existing within the Corporation.

2. DIRECTOR OF TRANSMISSION 1 Position

    Location  :  Head Office – Blantyre    

Supervised by   : Chief Operations Officer (COO) 

Purpose of the Job

The Director of Transmission shall be responsible to the Chief Operations Officer in the performance of his/her duties and responsibilities to effectively plan, organize, direct, control and manage the Transmission Licensee, as Strategic Business Unit (SBU), with complete responsibility over core activities, sales and support functions, accountable for revenue, cost and profitability.  The incumbent shall also direct divisional heads   in defining goals and objectives and develop   strategies to meet   and evaluate those goals. Act as a change agent by providing the means to foster and support a positive organizational culture.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

 

The Director of Transmission shall be responsible, but not limited, for the following:

  1. Directing and guiding the Transmission Licensee in the preparation of  its   strategic and   business    plans   and ensuring   the submissions   address requirements of the Electricity (amendment) Act of 2016;
  2. Representing the   Transmission Licensee in   the   Corporation`s strategic and business planning processes
  3. Ensuring that action plans for each division within the Transmission Licensee are derived from laws, market rules and other regulatory requirements relating to Transmission and in liaison with other divisional heads, that the material, human, and financial resources are available in the short, medium, and long terms for smooth implementation of such
  4. Ensuring timely preparation of the Revenue and Capital budgets to facilitate the translation into action of the requirements in the corporate strategic
  5. Continuously monitoring progress of each sub-division and Department and taking corrective action or introducing adjustments or alternatives to strategy implementation as dictated by available resources
  6. Ensuring that the Operations and Maintenance of the Transmission system and network and associated ancillary equipment are properly  managed, with emphasis   on quality and reliability of supply.
  7. Formulating policies, technical or otherwise relating to the Transmission operation and maintenance functions.
  8. Delivery of total  value   chain of the   SBU with more customer focus, which will bring high degree of customer satisfaction and high employee morale; and
  9. Carrying out any other duties as assigned by the Chief Operations Officer. 

Attributes and competencies

The ideal candidate for the position must possess the following: –

  • Impeccable skills in Microsoft Office packages (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Effective verbal and written communication abilities
  • Ability to manage time effectively in a high-pressure setting
  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Critical-thinking and assertiveness abilities
  • Detail-oriented personality
  • Ability to operate effectively both independently and as part of a team

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and, a relevant master’s degree in engineering from a recognized University.
  • Registered member of the Malawi Engineering Institution (MEI)
  • Ten (10) years’ work experience in the field/industry out of which five (5) years should have been acquired at Senior Management level or above.

Applicants with experience in the power supply industry will have an added advantage.

APPOINTMENT AND REMUNERATION

The successful candidate shall be offered a negotiable performance-related

contract for a period of three (3) years subject to renewal on satisfactory performance.
