Two people arrested for vandalising ESCOM assets

Police in Chikwawa have arrested Lyford Godoyi and Alex Snart in the district for allegedly vandalising and stealing the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) electrical conductor.

Chikwawa Police Station spokesperson, Dickson Matemba, said the law enforcers arrested Godoyi and Snart on Monday, January 20, 2025, when they wanted to sell the 200-meter conductor at the Boma.

He urged community members to refrain from stealing Escom assets as it affect service delivery such as for the health, education, and business sectors.

“Stealing and vandalising of Escom properties is a major problem here in Chikwawa and the police, in conjunction with community policing forums, are trying their best to curb the malpractice. We warn the public against indulging in such malpractice,” Matemba said.

The 43-year-old Godoyi hails from Chagambatuka Village whereas 45-year-old Snart is from Mwafumbi,  both in Sub Traditional Authority Chiputula in Chikwawa. The suspects will appear in court soon to answer charges to be leveled against them.

Being found in possession of stolen Escom equipment and vandalising the same are offences that attract a maximum 30-year jail term with no option of paying a fine. This is according to the Electricity Amendment Act of 2024.

Earlier, police in Nsanje arrested 18-year-old Naison Samuel for stealing an Escom aluminium conductor at Galafa Village on Sunday, January 11, 2025. The suspect was found in possession of three bags of aluminum wire.
