The SMO endeavours, at all times, to attain the following objectives:

The efficient discharge of the obligations imposed upon it;

Facilitating effective competition in the generation, trade and supply of electricity;

Promoting efficiency in the implementation and administration of the Market Rules;

The efficient implementation and management of the balancing and settlement provided by the Market Rules.
The system and market Operator is responsible for operating the interconnected Power system (IPS) and administering the electricity market, and holds the System and Market Operation license granted by the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) under the Energy Regulation Act in accordance with [Part II of the Electricity Act] .
