What is SMO
The Single Market Operator is responsible for operating the Interconnected Power System (IPS) and administering the electricity market. This role involves ensuring the reliable and efficient operation of the IPS, which is crucial for maintaining a stable supply of electricity across interconnected regions. The operator holds the System and Market Operation license, which is granted by the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) under the Energy Regulation Act.
This license allows the operator to manage and oversee the electricity market, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and facilitating the smooth functioning of the market. The licensing and regulatory framework is detailed in Part II of the Electricity Act, which outlines the legal and operational guidelines for entities involved in the electricity market.
