President Chakwera visits ESCOM Pavilion during Labour Day celebrations

State President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera and First Lady Madam Monica Chakwera visited the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited’s pavilion at Balaka Stadium during this year’s Labour Day celebrations on May 1, 2025.

President Chakwera took an interest in ESCOM’s displays at the pavilion, including personal protective equipment like safely belts, boots, helmets, and climbers.

“Are these helping in reducing accidents?” the President asked.

The Malawi leader also showed interest in ESCOM’s presentation on scholarships offered to outstanding120 female engineering students from the Malawi University of Science and Technology and the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences to encourage girls to take up engineering programmes.

ESCOM will also extend the scholarships, which include internship opportunities in the corporation for the female learners, to Lilongwe Technical College and Mzuzu University.

Speaking when President Chakwera visited the ESCOM pavilion, ESCOM Acting Chief Public Relations Officer, Peter Kanjere, highlighted the Corporation’s policies to foster gender equality and workplace safety.

“We have Gender and Social Inclusion, Anti-Sexual Harassment, and Human Resources Recruitment policies to encourage fair recruitment and promote women’s participation in engineering,” he said.

Kanjere added that ESCOM has so far sponsored 120 female students in engineering fields across the country, as part of its drive to bridge the gender gap in technical roles.

“We also encourage our staff to wear personal protective equipment to ensure their safety while working on power lines,” he emphasized.

The Labour Day was held under the theme: Democracy That Works for Decent Work for All. It underscored the Corporation’s commitment to safety, strong brand visibility, and the promotion of workers’ rights.
