About Optic Fibre Communications

The Optic Fibre Communications (OFC) is a semi-autonomous department within ESCOM that operates a national wide overhead Optic Fibre backbone network strung on electricity infrastructure reaching all parts of the country and the National Data Centre supported by the Malawi Government. This gives the business supreme advantages of stability, availability, reliability, efficiency and security

The business has a small customer base due to licensing model. It is regulated by the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) with three licences namely Internet Service Provider (ISP), International Gateway and Carrier of Carriers.

With a commitment to innovation and reliability, OFC is the major cutting-edge broadband solutions provider through advanced optic fibre technology dedicated to transforming the digital landscape in the telecommunications industry in Malawi. OFC is meant to be the key driver of the government agenda of making data affordable to the end user facilitating the growth of data users through affordability while growing data volume usage from current users.

Network Coverage/ Topology

Optic Fibre Communications has an international IP transit that connects to a backbone running across the country from Songwe border to Zobue, Chipata to Lundazi in Mzimba with Metro and access rings in all major cities and towns.

International Gateway: Zobue, Dedza Border, Songwe, Chipata, Milanje, Lundazi, Chiponde

Back hauling: The OFC network is present in all the district including Likoma Island

Metro Network: Available in 10 Districts; Blantyre, Thyolo, Zomba, Mangochi, Salima, Dedza, Lilongwe, Kasungu, Mzuzu and Karonga

Access Network: Available in Blantyre, Lilongwe, Zomba, and Mzuzu
