Beneficiaries of the Malawi Electricity Access Project (MEAP) in Mzimba have lauded ESCOM for transforming their lives through timely electricity connections.
The beneficiaries have further hailed ESCOM for the project’s flexible instalment payment options, which they say have them access electricity and boost their economic activities.
Chikondi Masiyano, a resident of Chimkusa location, says since her house was connected to electricity last month, she is now running a hair dressing saloon business at home while at the same time selling cold soft drinks.
“Through this project, ESCOM has changed my life as I am now able to earn something through the businesses,” said Masiyano.
On her part, another beneficiary, Sharon Nyasulu, said: “The speed of the connection from ESCOM was supersonic. I followed all the procedures, and now my life has completely changed because of this initiative.”
Overwhelmed with joy, Pastor Alinafe Kamzinga of Amazing Love of God Pentecostal Church had this to say:
“For over five years, we lived without electricity, which created major challenges. As you know, for a church to be vibrant, especially in engaging the youth, electricity is essential. The connection has made it easier to mobilize the youth and the entire congregation. We are now fully benefiting from this development, and our members have expressed great gratitude.”
Meanwhile, ESCOM Chief Public Relations and Communications Officer Pilirani Phiri says in Mzimba alone, the project has connected 2,052 houses as of June 2025 against a target of 2,500.
“We are excited with the positive impact that the project is having nationwide. The good news is that the project has been extended to December 2025. You may also want to know that the project targeted to connect 38,000 houses in the northern alone, and so far, 32,000 have been connected,” he said.
Overall, Phiri added that ESCOM has connected 146,000 households countrywide as of June 2025.
