A 27-year-old man identified as Geoffrey Matewere has died after being electrocuted while tampering with Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited property in Mangochi District.
Monkey Bay Police spokesperson, Alice Sichali, said the incident happened on January 15 2024 at Nankhwali Parish in Traditional Authority (T/A) Nankumba in the district.
She said on this particular day, eye witnesses saw the deceased sneaking into the premises of the parish reportedly with the intention to steal.
“Matewere interfered with the ESCOM’s main switch which was outside the parish, leading to a fatal electrical shock,” she said.
“Later on, his body was discovered close to the window outside the bedroom of one of the fathers.”
She said postmorten conducted on the body of the decreased confirmed that Matewere died of electrocution.
Sichali described Matewere as among the suspects behind a spate of cases of theft in the district.
The police have since warned the public against tampering with ESCOM assets such as cables to prevent accidents.
Matewere hailed from Mwenda Village, T/A Nankumba in Mangochi.
