Police in Nsanje have arrested 18-year-old Naison Samuel for stealing the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) aluminium conductor worth K800,000 in the district.
Nsanje Police Station spokesperson, Agness Zilakoma, said Samuel was arrested at Galafa Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Makoko, on Sunday, January 11, 2025, while in possession of three bags of the aluminium wire.
“He will appear in court on 16, January 2025 to answer charges of having in possession, stealing and vandalising Escom’s properties,” she said.
Zilakoma said Samuel, who hails from Robert Village, T/A Makoko, stole the cables alongside an accomplice who is at large.
“Stealing and vandalising Escom installations is a major problem here in Nsanje and police, in conjunction with community policing forums, are trying their best to curb the malpractice. We warn the public against indulging in such malpractices,” she said.
Zilakoma urged community members to refrain from stealing Escom assets as it affects service delivery such as for health, education and businesses.
Being found in possession of stolen Escom equipment and vandalising the same are offences that attract a maximum 30-year jail term with no option of paying a fine. This is according to the Electricity Amendment Act of 2024.
