Two men jailed for 30 months for possessing stolen ESCOM conductors

Two men have been sentenced to two-and-a-half-years imprisonment in Lilongwe following their conviction for possessing stolen electricity conductors at Kasiya in the district. The State Vice-President Dr Usi pays a surprise visit to ESCOM Ltd Head Office

The State Vice-President, Right Honourable, Dr. Michael Usi, paid a surprise visit to ESCOM Limited Head Office at Umoyo House in Blantyre on Friday, 26th July 2024 at around 10:00am to appreciate the Corporation’s operations in service delivery. The Vice-President visited the ESCOM CEO’s office before meeting ESCOM Chief Accountant Aurings Achinyama. The discussion lasted some 15 minutes and revolved around issues such as how electricity contributes to the development of the economy and also matters of service delivery.

EXTENSION OF MALAWI ELECTRICITY ACCESS PROJECT (MEAP) DEADLINE

The deadline for the Malawi Electricity Access Project (MEAP) has been extended from June 2024 to June 2025. The extension will give us ample time to complete the project successfully for the benefit of our potential customers. Currently, MEAP has measures to ensure speedy customers’ connections to electricity. This includes engaging contractors to facilitate new electricity connections. Two suspects arrested for theft and vandalism of Escom assets

Police at Kasiya in Lilongwe Rural have arrested two men suspected of stealing and vandalising Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) Limited assets in the district. Kasiya Police Station spokesperson, Constable Mercy Chitonde, said the law enforcers arrested Rodwell Chisamba and Emmanuel Gabriel on Friday, June 28 2024 for vandalising Escom conductors at Ndalama Village. She said the police had received a report from community members over the vandalism of the conductors in the village on April 26, 2024. World Bank describes MEAP’s 77,000 connections as historic

The World Bank has described the 77,000 on-grid electricity connections achieved in the past 12 months under the Malawi Electricity Access Project (MEAP), as the highest for such a period in the country’s history.   Michael Gondwe, Senior Energy Specialist at the World Bank, spoke to the bank’s website (www.worldbank.org/en/news/feature/) while giving an update on the on-grid component.   The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited implements the on-grid component whereas the Ministry of Energy runs the off-grid side. The legal battle against theft, tampering, and vandalism of the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited infrastructure has received a big push following President, Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera’s assenting to the Electricity (Amendment) Act. MAN NABBED FOR TAMPERING WITH ESCOM ASSETS

Police in Zomba have arrested 32-year-old Arnold Katunga in the old Capital City for allegedly tampering with ESCOM infrastructure on Sunday, June 2 2024. Zomba Police spokesperson,Patricia Sipiliano,  confirmed the incident, saying the suspected will be charged with the offence of tampering with ESCOM property contrary to sections of the Electricity Act. ESCOM Token Identifier (TID) Project Rolls out 358,947 Prepaid Meters

ESCOM Limited rolled out the TID project in June last year, targeting 537,000 customers. MEAP beneficiaries hail World Bank for new electricity connections

Some Malawi Electricity Access Project (MEAP) beneficiaries in Blantyre have hailed the World Bank for funding the project, saying it has improved their lives and businesses. Mkoka Health Centre in Nancholi Township, Matindi Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) in Matindi and Arabella Shopping Mall in Chileka are among the 74,800 beneficiaries of MEAP.
