Man jailed for 12 years for stealing electricity aluminium conductor

A Lilongwe man will spend 12 years in jail after being convicted of impersonating, stealing and damaging the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi ESCOM) aluminium conductor for a customer’s new electricity connection. Lilongwe Principal Resident Magistrate, Rodrick Michongwe, meted the punishment on 35-year-old James Banda after he pleaded guilty to the three offences when he appeared before the court on Wednesday, October 23, 2024. Parliamentary committee happy with MEAP progress

The Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources and Climate Change is optimistic that the Malawi Electricity Access Project (MEAP) will help the government meet its target of increasing the country’s electricity access to 50 percent by 2030. The committee’s Chairperson, Werani Chilenga, made the remarks on Saturday after visiting households that have benefitted from MEAP which the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited is implementing. Construction works for MOMA’s Matambo Substation in Mozambique on track

A contractor for 400kV New Matambo Substation in Tete, Mozambique, has assured of its completion by December this year. The substation is the hub of the Mozambique-Malawi (MOMA) Power Transmission 400kV Interconnection Project involving Malawi’s implementers, ESCOM Limited and Mozambique’s Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM). Mangochi Village Head electrocuted: Police warn against vandalizing ESCOM assets

Village Head (VH) Assani of Mangochi was electrocuted on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, while reportedly vandalising an ESCOM Limited powerline in the lakeshore district. Two jailed for vandalising and stealing Escom conductors

Vandalism, theft and possessing Escom Limited aluminium conductors, valued at K6 million, have earned two men jail terms of eight and six years in Mzuzu. Police prosecutor Betty Gondwe Msowoya said Senior Resident Magistrate Ashford Harawa delivered the eight-year jail term on Manson Simbeye and six years for Patrick Mpepu earlier this week.
