ESCOM Donates K4.68m Medical Supplies to Mulanje District Hospital

By Cosmas Kaunga, Outreach Officer

Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited donated medical supplies worth K4.68m to Mulanje District Hospital on Monday, August 7 2023.

The donation, which comprised gloves, Quinine Syrup, Amlodipine, HCTZ, Orofer, Scalpel blades and Vit Bco, is part of ESCOM’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.

Speaking when she presented the donation, ESCOM representative, Esther Makunganya, said the power utility company feels obliged to take part in initiatives that promote peoples’ living standards.

“We felt obliged to assist our brothers and sisters in Mulanje District with medical supplies so as to give them access to good health,” said Makunganya, who works as a nurse at ESCOM Clinic.

“We are aware that there are many hospitals facing a crisis of medical supplies and we thought that by donating to one hospital, we can make a difference in the community.”

Director of Health and Social Services for Mulanje District Hospital, Stalin Zinkanda, said the hospital is facing an acute shortage of medical suppliers.

He, therefore, thanked ESCOM Management for choosing to donate to their hospital.

“This donation is very important because most of the supplies that we have been given by ESCOM are the ones that we are lacking at the hospital. Therefore, this donation will go a long way to assist patients and minimise the gap of medical supplies’ shortage that we are facing,” he said.

The Nation Newspaper edition of Tuesday, 27th July 2023 stated that shortage of essential medicines and supplies in public hospitals has reached a tipping point, stretching even to private health facilities.

The Pharmaceutical Society of Malawi president William Mpute told The Nation that ideally, they expect 80-90 percent supply fill rate of essential commodities, but currently the ratio is below 50.
