By Kelly Napolo, Public Relations Intern

The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. Kamkwamba Kumwenda, has urged its employees to remain dedicated to advancing the company’s quality service delivery, while they pursue their ventures.

Kumwenda said this during a surprise farewell party for ESCOM Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), Kitty Doris Chingota, who will retire on December 31, 2024, after 19 years of exemplary service to the power utility company.

The guest of honour commended Chingota for her unwavering loyalty, professionalism, and dignity throughout her career while serving as ESCOM spokesperson.

“It is not very often that you have such loyal employees, especially in a company like ours that has weathered numerous challenges,” Kumwenda said.

He also urged employees to invest wisely during their tenure at ESCOM to secure their future beyond the workplace.

“How you spend your free time, say during weekends, determines what will keep you busy upon retirement. If you spend your free time playing bawo, you will do the same upon retirement,” Kumwenda said.

The Public Relations Department hosted the party, which brought together staff from various departments, to celebrate Chingota’s illustrious career.

Heartfelt speeches, gifts, and an atmosphere of joy and camaraderie highlighted the party.

In an interview, Chingota expressed deep gratitude to her colleagues and the company’s leadership for fostering a supportive and growth-oriented environment.

“ESCOM is the best company to work in. It has always been supportive, with a wonderful set of people,” she said

ESCOM Senior Public Relations Officer, Peter Kanjere, praised Chingota as a mentor and a mother figure, acknowledging her pivotal role in shaping the PR team.

Chingota joined ESCOM in 2006 as a Public Relations Officer after leaving the Malawi Revenue Authority where she was the Public Relations Manager.

Since then, the CPRO has been the face and voice of ESCOM. Her legacy of professionalism and dedication will undoubtedly serve as a guiding light for current and future employees.

As ESCOM bids farewell to one of its stalwarts, the company and its employees celebrate not just a career but a legacy that has left an indelible mark.
