Female employees of the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited on Friday, March 13, 2026, held a belated commemoration of International Women’s Day at the Malawi Sun Hotel in Blantyre to advance social and gender inclusion.
International Women’s Day is commemorated globally on March 8 each year to celebrate the achievements of women and promote gender equality. This year’s commemoration was held under the theme “Give to Gain.”
Also present at the event were ESCOM’s Acting Director of Human Resources and Administration, Tanda Kadammanja and Acting Director of Transmission, Gladys Kalinde who also served as Guest of Honour.
During her address, Kalinde, commended ESCOM’s female staff for their dedication and strong spirit of teamwork which have been crucial in contributing to the success of the Corporation.
“As the theme suggests, ‘Give to Gain,’ the company grows through the efforts and contributions that women employees make towards its success,” said Kalinde.
She further encouraged the women to continue giving their best in their respective roles in order to support the company’s productivity and operations.
During the motivational session, speakers emphasized the importance of personal development while consistently striving for excellence in the workplace.
ESCOM Zone Engineer for Chichiri, Mary Charity Chirwa, shared her personal journey and reflected on her professional growth since joining the company. She encouraged her colleagues to remain determined and pursue further education.
Malawi Legal Aid Bureau’s Principal Legal Aid Advocate, Chikondi Kasambara, who was the guest speaker at the event, urged women to advance their careers and encouraged those in junior positions to continually strive for growth.
“Personal growth is a personal project. Do not become comfortable where you are. Even as women, we must aim higher. Growth begins in our minds,” she said.
Reflecting on the success stories and motivational talks, Victoria Sifa, a linesperson from Salima, expressed appreciation for the event, saying it had greatly inspired her.
“The stories have really inspired me and I see this event as a turning point for me. When I go back, I will carry the messages from the speeches as food for thought,” she said.
The programme featured a variety of activities, including award presentations, the sharing of success stories, and motivational talks. The event brought together female ESCOM employees from Mzuzu, Lilongwe, Salima, Chikwawa, and Blantyre.
Earlier, the programme began with a donation activity at Lisawo Primary School in Chiradzulu, where high-performing female learners and teachers involved in science subjects were recognized with various gifts, including books and other writing materials.
