The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited signed a 3 megawatts (MW) Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Raiply Malawi Limited on Monday, 8th September 2025, translating to a total of 371MW from six deals sealed since last year.

Under the agreement, Raiply will supply 3MW of electricity from biomass (left- overs from wood production and forest) to the national grid, a significant boost to Malawi’s efforts to improve electricity supply and reduce outages.
Speaking at the ceremony, ESCOM Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Kamkwamba Kumwenda, described the signing of the PPA as a milestone in the Corporation’s mission to provide sustainable and reliable electricity for Malawians.
“This agreement marks a crucial step in the right direction for ESCOM and the people of Malawi. By adding 3 megawatts of electricity to our grid, we are not only increasing our capacity to meet the growing demand for power but also creating opportunities for economic empowerment and growth,” said Mr. Kumwenda
He emphasized that electricity is key to economic development, powering industries, businesses, and households across the country. He further thanked Raiply for the partnership, noting that the agreement reflects a shared commitment to supporting Malawi’s prosperity.
On his part, Raiply Malawi Limited CEO, Mr. Krishnadas Nair, expressed excitement at the partnership, highlighting the company’s readiness to begin supplying power soon.
“It is an exciting moment to sign the PPA with ESCOM. Our plan is to start generating power in less than two weeks. The 3 megawatts will be a continuous supply to ESCOM, and Raiply will be able to manage effectively, making it a great backup to ESCOM,” he said.
Mr. Nair added that Raiply has long-term plans to increase its generation capacity but, for now, is focused on delivering the agreed 3MW.
“We are happy with the support we have received from ESCOM since they are already our business partners. We look forward to a very successful and productive agreement for both Raiply and ESCOM,” he concluded.
This agreement with Raiply is the sixth PPA signed by ESCOM in the past months, reinforcing the Corporation’s commitment to diversifying energy sources and improving electricity reliability for Malawians.
ESCOM also signed PPAs in the past months with Press Energy (50MW), Aspin Energy (142MW), Aza Gas Power Plant (75MW), Mzuni (50MW) and Nyika Hydropower (51MW).
