The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) has reached a key milestone in its Meter Migration Project, achieving 30% completion as of December 2025.
Since the project launched in October 2025, 3,939 of the 13,236 targeted postpaid customers have successfully transitioned to the prepaid system.
The remaining customers represent the final group to be transitioned following a nationwide migration exercise that began in 2016. The project aims to enhance billing accuracy, improve revenue protection, and streamline customer service.
After a brief pause for the festive season (20 December to 5 January), operations have resumed.
ESCOM remains confident in meeting its 30 April 2026 completion target, according to Friday Kapindula Chief Revenue Protection Engineer.
“Nearly a third of customers have transitioned, reflecting the hard work of our teams and strong public cooperation. This upgrade reduces billing disputes and provides a more transparent service experience,” he said.
By modernizing its metering infrastructure, ESCOM is better positioned to manage the national distribution network and provide more consistent, error-free service to its customers.
