ESCOM CALLS FOR JOINT EFFORTS TO COMBAT VANDALISM

The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) has called on the public and all relevant stakeholders to take responsibility in safeguarding the Corporation’s materials and help curb acts of vandalism.

The call follows a recent incident which occurred on 26th September 2025 at Nanjiri Trading Centre in Lilongwe where two suspects, Yona Chiwaula and Wiles Kadammanja, were found in possession of three bags containing burnt four-core aerial aluminium bundled conductors.

This prompted community members to apprehend the two and manhandle them.

Kadammanja was handed over to Area 3 Police Station, while Chiwaula sustained serious injuries and is receiving treatment at Kamuzu Central Hospital while a third suspect escaped.

Reacting to the incident, ESCOM Public Relations and Communications Officer, Pilirani Phiri, underscored the need for collective action in fighting vandalism, saying the malpractice undermines efforts to provide a reliable power supply.

“We reiterate our plea to the public and all our stakeholders to help us combat vandalism. We need everyone’s support to overcome this vice, which is retrogressive and paralyses our efforts towards reliable power supply,” said Phiri.

It was further reported that nine spans and a nine-metre pole were vandalized at Naferanji Village, with the stolen materials valued at K3,924,000.
