CEO Leads ESCOM in Parliamentary Committee Briefing
ESCOM Management, led by Chief Executive Officer Engineer William Kaipa, on Thursday 18th June appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Media, Information, and Communications to present progress reports on critical operational and national policy agendas.
The engagement, which was described as highly cordial and successful, gave ESCOM an opportunity to demonstrate its pivotal role in driving Malawi’s socio-economic landscape through digital infrastructure and corporate transparency.
The discussion centered around three core pillars of ESCOM’s modern mandates.
OFC Business Growth
Management presented the milestones achieved by the Optic Fibre Communications (OFC) directorate. With a 7,000 km fibre network operating across 28 districts and a growing footprint in the FTTx (Fibre-to-the-Home/Business) market, the OFC continues to stand out as a premier national infrastructure provider.
National Digitalisation Policy Alignment
The committee was briefed on how ESCOM’s modern ICT framework directly integrates with the National Digitalisation Policy (2023-2028) and the overarching Malawi 2063 vision, turning technological capacity into an economic catalyst.
Access to Information Act (ATIA) Compliance
ESCOM provided updates on its strict adherence to the ATIA framework. This included detailing the 53 stakeholder enquiries processed seamlessly over the past six months through interim Information Officers in the Public Relations and Communications Department.
The committee was also updated that the recruitment of a full-time Information Officer remains on hold due to the current government freeze on public sector recruitment.
Committee Praise and Future Stance on Vandalism
The Members of Parliament were deeply impressed by the rapid inroads and technical milestones achieved by the OFC directorate. Building on this positive reception, ESCOM extended an invitation to the committee members to physically tour the National Data Centre to experience ESCOM’s secure hosting infrastructure firsthand.
In his closing remarks, CEO Kaipa thanked the parliamentarians for their robust policy feedback as well as the cordial engagement that the interface was held.
