BUILDING A GRID THAT CAN WEATHER THE STORM

For years, communities, businesses and industries across Thyolo, Mulanje, Phalombe and Chiradzulu have depended on the 66kV Mapanga–Fundis Cross Transmission Line for electricity. Stretching 44 kilometres, this critical power corridor has quietly carried the energy that powers homes, schools, hospitals, tea estates and businesses in the Southern Region.

From 8 June 2026, ESCOM, through Sawa Group, is undertaking a major upgrade of this vital transmission line which will run until December 2026 to replace wooden poles with durable concrete structures designed to withstand the demands of a modern electricity network.

When Ageing Infrastructure Becomes a Challenge

In the infrastructure, wooden poles have a short lifespan. After years of service, many of the poles supporting the Mapanga–Fundis Cross Transmission Line have become increasingly vulnerable to weather-related damage, wear and tear, and structural deterioration.

This has resulted in a growing need for maintenance interventions and repairs, especially during periods of adverse weather. Strong winds and heavy rains can place significant stress on ageing infrastructure, increasing the likelihood of faults and supply disruptions.

As electricity demand continues to grow, maintaining an ageing network becomes increasingly challenging. To ensure continued reliability and strengthen the network for the future, a more durable solution became necessary.

Why Concrete Poles?

Concrete poles offer several advantages over traditional wooden structures. They are stronger, more durable and better equipped to withstand harsh weather conditions. Unlike wooden poles, they are less susceptible to deterioration and require less frequent maintenance over their lifespan.

By replacing wooden poles with concrete alternatives, ESCOM is investing in infrastructure that will provide greater network stability and reliability for decades to come.

The upgrade is not simply about replacing poles; it is about building a stronger and more resilient transmission system capable of supporting Malawi’s growing energy needs.

Strengthening a Critical Economic Corridor

The Mapanga–Fundis Cross Transmission Line serves some of Malawi’s most productive agricultural and commercial areas. Among them is the country’s tea-growing belt, where reliable electricity plays a vital role in processing operations and supporting economic activity.

The line also supplies power to schools, health facilities, businesses and households across the four districts.

A stable electricity supply enables industries to operate efficiently, helps businesses remain productive and supports the delivery of essential public services. By strengthening this key transmission corridor, ESCOM is helping create conditions that support economic growth and development across the region.

In recent years, extreme weather events have highlighted the importance of resilient infrastructure.

Concrete poles are designed to withstand challenging environmental conditions, reducing the risk of storm-related damage and prolonged outages. Their installation will help strengthen the transmission network and improve ESCOM’s ability to provide reliable electricity, even during adverse weather conditions.
