Vandalism of electricity equipment, possession of stolen property, and theft have earned a man a three-year jail term in Balaka.
Balaka Magistrate’s Court handed a 36-month jail term on Paul Lipenga on December 31, 2024. The convict hails from Mgwira Village, Traditional Authority Kalembo in Balaka.
Magistrate Peter Mkuzi sentenced the 46-year-old to 36 months for vandalism of electricity installation equipment and 18 months each for possession of stolen property and theft. The sentences will run concurrently.
Lipenga’s arrest followed a tip-off received by Balaka Police detectives on November 22, 2024.
Assistant Detective Sub-Inspector Bunaya investigated the case that Superintendent Bodwin Msukwa prosecuted.
Balaka Police Station spokesperson, Gladson M’bumpha, said the suspect was found in possession of 300 meters of 50mm Hazzle Wire valued at K5,500,000, stolen from ESCOM infrastructure at Mbera Trading Centre.
“A search at Lipenga’s residence uncovered the stolen wires. Upon interrogation, Lipenga led the police to the vandalized scene. He was immediately taken into custody,” M’bumpha explained.
Theft and vandalism of ESCOM property have been a significant concern in Malawi, disrupting electricity services and causing substantial financial losses.
Lipenga’s conviction marks another step in fighting theft and vandalism of essential infrastructure in Malawi.
