Man sentenced to 4 years imprisonment for vandalising ESCOM Limited assets in Mchinji

By Labani Makalani The First Grade Magistrate Court in Mchinji has convicted and sentenced a 42-year-old man to four years imprisonment with hard labour for vandalising ESCOM assets in the western border district. Prosecutor Sub Inspector Yotam Chaonaine of Mchinji Police Station confirmed that Magistrate Yohane Nkhata passed the judgement on the convict—James Solomoni—on March 14, 2024. Man jailed for five years for vandalising ESCOM materials

A 35-year-old man has been sentenced to five years imprisonment at Chilinga in Phalombe District after being convicted for vandalizing the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited assets. Chilinga Second Grade Magistrate, Steve Samuti, slapped the convict—Ofesi Mangani—with the jail term on January 20, 2024 after pleading guilty to the offences of theft and vandalism of ESCOM materials. ESCOM Asset Mapping Project to Improve Faults Handling

Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited Asset Mapping Project Coordinator for the Central Region, Brian Mbewe, says the project will help improve faults handling through easy tracking of customers’ locations.   Mbewe said this in an interview while giving an update on the project which seeks to map the low voltage network for ESCOM.   “The project started in 2018 with the mapping of high voltage network. However, this final phase started in August 2022 and is expected to conclude in February this year,” he said.
