Taking ESCOM to Communities: A Joint Effort Seeks to Combat Vandalism

By Hopeson Kafumbwa To proactively curb escalating vandalism cases of ESCOM’s property, the Central West Region of the Police will launch a ‘Take ESCOM to Communities’ campaign. The region’s community policing head, Sup. Byson Golden, said they will conduct the campaign jointly with ESCOM later this month. Parliamentary committee happy with MEAP progress

The Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources and Climate Change is optimistic that the Malawi Electricity Access Project (MEAP) will help the government meet its target of increasing the country’s electricity access to 50 percent by 2030. The committee’s Chairperson, Werani Chilenga, made the remarks on Saturday after visiting households that have benefitted from MEAP which the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited is implementing. Two ESCOM employees and others nabbed for vandalism

Police in Balaka District arrested two ESCOM employees and several others on Thursday, August 22 2024 for vandalizing ESCOM property. Balaka Police Station spokesperson Gladson M’bumpha said the arrests follow an investigation into incidents of vandalism that occurred on the nights of August 8-9 and August 18-19, 2024, at Govati Village and Phombeya Substation within Phalula. “The suspects apprehended include Rodgers Mkwanda, 25 and Stanford Chabwera, 30 who are ESCOM security guards stationed at ESCOM’s Substation in Phombeya,” he said. Man arrested for allegedly vandalizing ESCOM and Water Board properties

Police in Mangochi have arrested 40-year-old Joseph Simeon for allegedly vandalizing Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited and Southern Region Water Board (SRWB) properties in the lakeshore district.   Mangochi Police spokesperson, Amina Daudi, said the law enforcers have been receiving reports from ESCOM of incidents of unknown criminals vandalizing transformers in the district.   “During this period, several transformers in locations such as Namiyasi, Mosiya, Mgundaphiri, Kalonga, and Mpondasi were tampered with, resulting in the theft of cables and fuses,” she said.   Daudi said

MAN NABBED FOR TAMPERING WITH ESCOM ASSETS

Police in Zomba have arrested 32-year-old Arnold Katunga in the old Capital City for allegedly tampering with ESCOM infrastructure on Sunday, June 2 2024. ESCOM Token Identifier (TID) Project Rolls out 358,947 Prepaid Meters
