His Excellency the State President of the Republic of Malawi, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika on Wednesday, 25th October 2017 met with ESCOM and EGENCO Management at ESCOM Offices, Umoyo House in Blantyre, to appreciate the power supply situation in the country.
The State President was briefed by both ESCOM and EGENCO CEOs on the challenges that are being experienced in the supply and generation of power, and on short to medium term mitigation measures that have been planned and are currently underway.
The President expressed concern on the present power supply situation which has come about due to the lack of investment in the energy sector of the country for over 15 years. He, however, assured Malawians that the situation will improve greatly by December 2017 with the installation of 78MW of diesel power plants to supplement to the available power generation capacity.
At present, ESCOM has only 160MW available to distribute against a demand of 300 MW, thus having a shortfall of 140 MW. Of the available 160 MW, about 60 MW is reserved for major referral hospitals and water pumping stations. Only 100 MW is therefore, available for distribution to all customers countrywide. This has resulted in extended load shedding periods.
