Bangula Senior Magistrate’s Court convicted and sentenced 40-year-old Cosmas Namalima to three years’ imprisonment with hard labour on Tuesday September 27 2022 for vandalising ESCOM property in Nsanje District.

The court, through State prosecutor Sub-Inspector Banda, heard that the convict vandalized copper wire valued at K1.8 million at M’bwazi Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Mulolo in the district.

Appearing before the court, Namalima reportedly pleaded not guilty to the charge of vandalism, prompting the State to parade three witnesses who proved beyond reasonable doubt that he committed the offence.
Passing the sentence, Senior Magistrate Linda Chiwanda concurred with the State’s submission and meted out the sentence.

Namalima hails originally from Kuweluza Village, T/A Changata in Thyolo District.

ESCOM has since intensified interventions to fight increasing cases of vandalism on its property, the latest being community awareness campaigns currently underway in Central region Districts.

Similar campaigns took place in the Southern and Northern regions since July last year.

ESCOM encourages the public to report cases of vandalism and theft to its offices or nearest police.
